A bitter taste in the tongue can result from a variety of medical conditions. These include GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and issues with the liver or gallbladder. The bitter taste may be accompanied by additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, exhaustion and stomach discomfort.
Medical conditions including diabetes and gum disease might be the source of a metallic taste on your tongue. Some people also have a metallic taste in their mouth in case of heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion.
If you have diabetes and your body is struggling to regulate blood sugar, then high levels of glucose may be causing a sweet taste in the mouth. Symptoms you experience with this taste include increased thirst, frequent urination and blurred vision.
There may be a sour, unpleasant taste in your mouth when your stomach acid backs up into the oesophagus, this happens due to acid reflux or GERD. Other health issues like nutritional deficiencies, infections, and neurological abnormalities can also result in a sour taste.
Your mouth may taste salty if you are dehydrated because your body may be trying to preserve water by producing less saliva. This may also lead to more symptoms alongside the salty taste, such as a dry mouth, thirst, fatigue, and muscle weakness.
