5 Things To Know About Italy’s ‘Ndrangheta Mafia

Sneha Swaminathan

The ‘Ndrangheta originated in the impoverished Calabria region, dating back to at least the unification of Italy in 1861.

Surpassing the Cosa Nostra, the ‘Ndrangheta controls the majority of cocaine entering Europe, accumulating immense power and wealth.

From its Calabrian origins, the ‘Ndrangheta has expanded its operations to over 40 countries, establishing a global presence.

Experts estimate approximately 150 ‘Ndrangheta families in Calabria, with thousands of associates worldwide, contributing to a substantial criminal network.

With an annual turnover exceeding 50 billion euros, the ‘Ndrangheta faces international efforts such as the I-CAN programme, aiming to educate and encourage information-sharing. Recent major operations, like the 2020 raids and Italy’s largest mafia trial in decades, target the group’s criminal activities in specific regions, exposing crimes ranging from murder to money laundering.
