Nishtha Badgamia

As the United States President Joe Biden turned 81 on Monday (Nov 20), making him the oldest person to ever occupy the Oval Office, concerns about his age amid his re-election bid are once again making headlines. But he is far from the oldest world leader currently in power.

According to an analysis by the Pew Research Center, roughly one in every three world leaders is in their 60s, while median age of all world leaders is 62. The United States is one of only two countries that have a leader in their 80s or older.

Paul Biya, Cameroon

Born in 1993, the president of Cameroon is the oldest head of state in the world. As of 2023, he is 90 years old and took office over 40 years ago.

Mahmoud Abbas, State of Palestine

The president of the State of Palestine, according to Pew Research Center report, is the second-oldest elected world leader and is 88 years old.

Joe Biden, United States

At the age of 80, Biden was the ninth oldest national leader in the world, according to Pew Research Center published in March. He was also the oldest American president when he took the top job at the age of 78.

Gabriel Boric, Chile

According to the report, the President of Chile Gabriel Boric (37), is the youngest head of government for whom an exact date of birth could be found.

Dritan Abazovic, Montenegro

The 37-year-old Prime Minister of Montenegro is also among the youngest world leaders. Dritan Abazovic took office last year and once served as the country’s deputy PM.
