Nutritionist Explains Why You Should Have More of These 6 Leafy Greens

Leafy greens offer numerous health benefits as they are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre but are low in calories. They boost brain health and lower risk of heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure.

In an article written for The Conversation, Dr Swrajit Sarkar Senior Lecturer in Nutrition, City, University of London, lists the benefits of various leafy greens and recommends them in your daily diet. 

Spinach

Full of iron, calcium, potassium and vitamins B6, C and K, Spinach is available all year round. It is a good source of antioxidants and helps reduce the risk of certain cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. 

Bok Choy 

A variety of Chinese white cabbage, this leafy vegetable is rich in fibre and helps maintain bone health, immunity, vision and keeps blood pressure in check.

Watercress 

Watercress is a rich source of vitamins A and C and antioxidants. Dr Sarkar suggests that watercress could be a therapeutic agent in oral cancer.

Kale 

Kale has gained popularity with its unique taste and numerous health benefits as it is packed with important micronutrients such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamins A, B, E, C and K. 

Rocket 

Rocket, also known as arugula and eruca, is rich in vitamins K and C, and calcium and polyphenols. The nutritionist from the University of London says it can boost performance in sports. 

Romaine lettuce 

Romaine lettuce is a good source of fibre, vitamins A, K, C and folate (vitamin B-9) which are essential for maintaining overall health and reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer.
