Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a sortie in the dual-seat Tejas trainer on Nov 25. It was a brand new Tejas handed over to the Indian Air Force.
The Prime Minister taking a sortie shows the confidence government has on the safety of this particular aircraft.
The IAF has 32 Tejas fighter jets and two squadrons are operational from the Sulur airbase in Tamil Nadu state.
IAF is set to have a total of 123 Tejas aircraft in the coming years.
Tejas is at the centre of Modi administration’s push for self-reliance in defence sector. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) recently signed a deal with the US-based General Electric for manufacturing jet engines in India.
