‘Sus’, ‘Yeet’ Among Top 5 Slangs Used by Teens in 2023, Finds Survey

Online language learning platform Preply released a report based on their 2023 survey to know which slang American parents of teenagers are most familiar with. The report surveyed 682 parents with children between the ages of 12 and 18. 

Nearly three in five parents said that they keep up with modern slang to better connect with their teens and Googled a term after seeing or hearing them use it. Only two per cent of knew every slang term on the list.

5. Cap 

Around 49 per cent of teenagers use the word ‘cap’, according to the parents who took the survey. It is defined by the Urban Dictionary as “Another word for lying. It can be used like no cap or you can say, stop capping.” 

4. Salty 

51 per cent of parents have heard their teenagers use the word ‘salty’ which Urban Dictionary defines as “When you are upset over something little.” 

3. Yeet 

Out of the parents surveyed, 57 per cent said their teens have used the word ‘yeet’ which means “To violently throw an object that you deem to be worthless, inferior or just plain garbage.”

2. Bet 

At number 2 we have the word ‘bet’ used by 59 per cent of teenagers, as per their parents which is an expression which means “I agree” or “good news.” The term seems to have replaced the old slang term ‘word’. 

1. Sus 

62 per cent of teens used the word ‘Sus’ in 2023. The term, as per the survey, became popular thanks to the game Among Us and is used to suggest that something or someone is giving the impression of being “questionable or dishonest; suspicious.”
